3 Questions with Matthieu Ghibaudo about Xeal™ and TiUltra™ surfaces

Dr. Matthieu Ghibaudo is a prosthodontist based in Montpellier, France, and a member of the FOR Emerging Leader Program. Dr. Ghibaudo has experience with pre-implant surgery, sinus lifts, regenerative dentistry, and implant therapies including single-implant cases to full arch with static-guided surgery, navigated surgery, and prosthetic rehabilitation.

As part of our ongoing “Three questions with…” series, we asked Dr. Ghibaudo three questions about the ongoing 1,000-patient, multi-center study investigating TiUltra™ and Xeal™ surfaces. We also inquired about what the gradual change in surface roughness of TiUltra implants means in real-world clinical practice. Watch the video below for Dr. Ghibaudo’s responses.

Q: Why do you use TiUltra™ and Xeal™ surfaces?

A: What interested me first with the TiUltra surface was the ability to have a less rough surface in the collar, and this concept was really interesting for me in case of peri-implantitis. And, we have some new features with the Xeal surface on the prosthetic component that I use every day with the N1™ Base.

Q: What makes the Xeal and TiUltra study with 1,000 patients stand out?

A: We [used] more than 30 clinics to collect data from 1,000 patients around the world, and we can say today that this surface works well. It changed my approach from my clinical data. We are studying in a prospective way with a really strict process.

Prospective study: Soft tissue health at novel two-piece anodized abutments – 2-year results

At the two-year mark of Drs. Giacomo Fabbri and Giorgio Ban’s three-year prospective study, the results show healthy papilla regeneration to full height at 90% of implant sites as well as increased keratinized mucosa height from prosthetic delivery to six months, then stable at the two-year mark.

Q: TiUltra surface changes gradually. So, what are the main benefits?

A: It’s a good feature to have a less rough surface in the collar, to be able to fight in case of complications, like peri-implantitis, and still have the best of both worlds with a more rough surface around the apex, to have the good osseointegration and fast osseointegration in the apex to be able to do, like, immediate implant placement.
