In homage to Per-Ingvar Brånemark: May 3, 1929 - December 20, 2014

by: Richard Laube

"His relentless devotion to high standards and supreme respect for biology ultimately ensured that patients everywhere had the opportunity to receive a life-changing and life-long solution."

I have met P-I at his home on several occasions. The first time was in May of 2011, shortly after I joined Nobel Biocare. I must confess that I did not fully understand the depth and full meaning of his words. Subsequent discussions with him illuminated the full scope and the remarkable nature of his discovery. The fact that he observed titanium could be accepted by the body as if it was its own is nothing short of a ground-breaking medical discovery – but that he quickly realized the potential for medical treatment is the highest form of creativity and, in fact, genius. He was able to apply this discovery to not just dental implant-based restorations but also to other medical devices for treating patients – from hips to knees, and even to faces. It is now quite easy to see that his work has truly changed the world and will continue to do so.

He understood better than anyone, however, that implant fixtures are not nature’s own creation, but medical intervention that must be treated with the greatest of care. His relentless devotion to high standards and supreme respect for biology ultimately ensured that patients everywhere had the opportunity to receive a life-changing and life-long solution.

P-I will forever be the spiritual foundation of Nobel Biocare. We are committed to carry on his life’s work. Our deepest and most sincere condolences go out to his family. We will all miss him.
