Immediate function up front

by: Jim Mack

Immediate implant placement is the patient-preferred option in the anterior maxilla. (Hof et al. Clin Implant Dent Relat Res. 2014 epub ahead.)

Of five different treatment protocols evaluated, patient satisfaction was significantly higher for immediate implant placement.

The five implant placement protocols differed in time of implant placement (immediate, early, or delayed) and presence vs. absence of grafting (simultaneous guided bone regeneration or autologous bone block). All treatment protocols showed favorable clinical, radiological, and esthetic results at 4.5 years mean follow-up of 153 patients with TiUnite implants.

Patient satisfaction assessed through the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) differed significantly between protocols and was highest for immediate implant placement (VAS of 95%), which according to the authors could be attributed to the psychological expectation of immediate tooth replacement engendering immediate esthetics.
