Professor Per-Ingvar Brånemark

Per-Ingvar Brånemark's seminal osseointegration research led to its global launch in May 1982 at the Toronto Conference on Tissue Integrated Prostheses. The resultant worldwide trajectory of its clinical application ensured exciting and continuing synergies between clinical disciplines and the world of biomaterials; and the ensuing years have also seen numerous clinical scientists coloring in novel additional details to the technique with a resultant and exciting expansion of its versatility and application.

Ongoing research continues to nurture and expand clinical applications of osseointegration and this 30th Anniversary Symposium offers presentations from some of the best minds in clinical dentistry. Our invited lecturers from the international community of dental scholars will synthesize current information on what is best and safest in providing treatment with dental implants; and in the necessary context of patient-mediated concerns regarding optimal outcomes.

Revisit Toronto thirty years later

Welcome to Toronto! We are here to celebrate the landmark Toronto Conference held in 1982 and the sharing of the scientific breakthrough of osseointegration.

It is amazing that one accidental discovery by Professor Per-Ingvar Brånemark in 1952 can create an entire industry. However the road to worldwide acceptance wasn’t easy, it took another 30 years before osseointegration was internationally accepted as a treatment modality. In 1982 Professor George Zarb played a pivotal role in organizing the landmark conference in Toronto, Canada, where osseointegration was finally acknowledged and internationally accepted. The proceedings of this historic conference enabled dental implants to gain acceptance as a treatment method in the global dental community. In acknowledgement of these historic occasions, 60 years of osseointegration and 30 years since the landmark conference in Toronto, we revisit the city once again in October 2012.

Professor Zarb as the Scientific Chair focuses the conference on "Three decades of patient mediated outcomes and concerns with osseointegration." The conference will feature some of the best minds in clinical dentistry and discuss what is the best and safest in providing treatment with dental implants.

To be able to shape the future, you have to know the history. I hope you will join us for two very exciting days of professional lectures, constructive interaction with colleagues and enjoy our anniversary party at the Muzik Night Club.

We look forward to celebrating with you in October!
